Is there an easy way to change the path use for path text?

I created a curved line using the pen tool. I then applied text to this line.

Now I’d like to adjust the path a bit. However, even when I select the Direct Selection tool and hover over the end point of the path, I can’t seem to select the point (the little black square even turns hollow). Somehow, it will NOT allow me to drag just this point. Is there an easier way or shortcut to do this, or do I have to redo the whole thing over again?

try the ‘covert anchor point tool’ that looks like ^ . it works to grab the end points and reshape the curve.
