If I get a new iMac can I salvage Premiere CS3?
I have Adobe Master Collection CS3 on discs and have been running them on an offline partition in OSX Lion somewhat crankily for a few years now.
Then I tried to upgrade my main boot volume to High Sierra and now have a broken partition that won’t complete the upgrade from El Capitan to High Sierra. This machine also has a photo drive I am hoping to save.
I have a backup drive that I think has a disc image of the Lion drive and a disc image of the photos drive. I have never restored from backup before I’m not sure what will happen.
I also have Snow Leopard on a CD install disc. Good times. Premiere ran happiest on Snow Leopard. I fear licensing hiccups telling me I have Photoshop on too many partitions and offline drives and it won’t start.
A family member offered to buy me a new machine that would be running Catalina. This sounds great for running Ableton and 3D printer software, bad for running Adobe Premiere and Photoshop CS3.
Possible plans:
1. New computer and make a harddrive partition on the new computer to try to install an older version of OSX, either by Snow Leopard disc or attempting to get an installer on a thumb drive, but I tried to save High Sierra to thumb drive on my laptop in Yosemite and it said the installer on thumb drive was a corrupt installer and wouldn’t run. and reinstall Master Collection CS3 on the offline older partition. I do not know if I can get to High Sierra on an older partition.2. New computer and keep the old imac on the desk next door and muck about with it some more trying to revive my Lion drive.
3. New computer and try to restore from disc image on a separate partition.
4. There is one repair guy in town who might repair the old imac and help me with my upgrade. Last time I brought a computer to him he referred me to an assistant for mac repairs. The assistant left town so either he got a new employee or he doesn’t do macs anymore. The Genius Bar is like two hours away and my senior family members can’t get me to an Apple Store.
I dunno, what would you all do in 2021?

I would use software that’s not 14 years old, like for example Resolve. CS3 is absolutely ancient in every way.

It’s time to leave CS3 behind – I know it’s tempting to stay with what you know, and of course, you don’t have to pay a monthly subscription fee, but unless you’re still producing VHS and DVD, it’s time to move on. Maybe FCP at a one time fee, or Resolve which is free are worth looking at.
For myself I’m using Premiere 2019 on my older Windows system, and just installed 2021 on my new Mac Mini.

“Get with it” posts are not wrong but it’s an admireable resistance to the relentless futurism of capital to try to use old tools that work well despite marketing pressure. Unfortunately, it can become increasingly difficult. Used to be we cut film with scissors, then we had splicing blocks that worked for decades. I heard CS6 was a pretty good program — wish I had bought it. Adobe keeps “updating” PP but can’t seem to get it to work right or consistently.

You can no longer reinstall Creative Suite 2, 3 or 4 even if you have
the original installation disks. The aging activation servers for those

Thank you for the point about activation servers. I am crying but needed to hear that. I’ll just pray they don’t kick my license out and tell me to reinstall which I can’t do.
I bought my discs in 2008 on student loans and got competent in three apps but did not master the economics of presenting a portfolio and getting paid. I figured out the tools but can’t get hired by a graphic design house.
I guess I’m getting a new computer and switching to Davinci Resolve for video, Amadine for vector art, and maybe paying one month here and there for Acrobat for my resumes or Photoshop/Lightroom for branding graphics.
I’m just totally up a creek for InDesign, can’t afford Quark Express.

As an instructor for a local college, I feel for you.
But even worse when my day job paid for so many updates (Master Collection) and is now defunct.
However, the Adobe Cloud version is a great option if you can afford it.
Especially if you are using the whole package.
Nothing wrong with Resolve Free for video and grading but if you still need to wear your graphics design hat, then you definitely will need help.
