    My system

    HP – AMD II 6 core 2.8Ghz
    8GB of RAM,(4X2
    1.5TB – GREEN DRIVE

    External ESATA connection
    Internal ESATA 3 card
    2 X SATA 3 – 3 TB drives, stripped together into a 5.5TB RAID
1 X Pioneer SATA Blue Ray drive
    650 Watt Power Supply.

Will upgrading to double the RAM, and or replacing that Green Drive make a significant difference. I get 10 layers (So Far) as is?

Glad I left FCP by the way. :))

    Yes, more RAM is better.

    Darren,

One thing to remember is that more layers also means more data throughput from the drives. At some point, depending on your footage, those 3 drives just won’t cut it, especially in RAID 5.

I’d definitely recommend adding more ram to your system. I started with 6 Gigs in my system and added another 12 not to long ago to bring the total to 18, and It’s made a HUGE difference. I don’t have a CUDA card and I haven’t done anything with lots of layers yet, but I HAVE seen a big improvement in real-time performance. If I drop the playback resolution to half, I can now play back a clip with several complex effects added to it- like color correction, ProcAmp, and a blur effect- in real time.

Having lots of ram will also help a lot if you want to do a dynamic link to an AE comp, since you’ll have two ram-loving programs open at once…

    Tom,

I appreciate your efforts here, but I know what the minimum requirements are.

The situation, and frankly the question asks at what level of Memory, am I wasting my money. The motherboard can handle a max of 16GB. Will that help the real-time performance. I know it will be better if I run multiple apps, but typically, that’s not my world.

    More is not always better.

    My original question remains.

It’s 2 drives at this point raided as a 0. I plan to handle security with a backup drive.

Remember, these 3TB drives are SATA III, each with 64GB as a buffer. Formats as a 5.5TB Raid.

The 10 layers are fine at least to a length of 30 seconds of clip, which works for me.

Switching from Apple has been fun. Scary, but Fun!
