Identifying codecs

If you want to know the codec you can use MediaInfo.
https://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/nl
If you do not know which setting to choose drag the clip from the project bin into the new item icon. This will create a timeline with the same settings as the clip.

Not at all. Just right-click on a clip in your project window or timeline and choose “Properties…” This gives you a window FILLED with information — with a lot of information you won’t get from QT or FCP….

Thanks for the tip but I did try the obvious avenues prior to posting my question. Properties will identify a certain group of codecs but not mpeg2, mt2, mpeg4, etc.
I followed the recommendations of using MedieInfo as a third party freeware and it works great.

Glad you “tried the obvious avenues” prior to posting your question.

You wrote that you were trying to identify an asset’s codec. Editing with mpeg2, mt2, mpeg4 etc is rare at best, so I imagine most readers assumed you were either dealing with a MOV or AVI container.

Next time if you are more specific in your post it will help us avoid posting obvious answers.
