i am shooting a documentary for an eventual dvd release…..mostly being shot on canon xl2 and dvx, in 24p mode.

what would i gain by bringing the footage in at dv50 instead of 25 (other than of course using my HD space?

this project is going straight to dvd, no broadcast, so, was wondering what i would gain. i plan on doing a lot of color correction, rotoscoping, etc, will it help me with that?

    Ben,

From what I’ve been able to learn from others here regarding upconverting to a different (less compressed) codec is that graphics will indeed benefit but the actual DV video won’t.

The idea is sound enough but the results may not be worth the overhead in time, storage, and conversion hassles. Think of it as shooting super8 and releasing on 35mm. There’s a tradeoff.
And there’s no clearly defined workflow; everyone trying up-conversions chooses a different pathway. I’ve never searched for the information but there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of Web sites and blogs for indie producers who have taken different routes to their release medium.

If you decide to pursue it, please come back and tell us how made out or leave us a link to your blog. Good luck with your doco. Stay organized and monitor your audio carefully!

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
