    I have many layers that I want to cast shadows on the layers below using a light. In order for that to happen I need each layer in the time line to be above in Z space the layer below in the time line.
    I already have the x and y keyframed so I want an expression that will just repo the z position above the layer beneath it so it will cast a shadow.
    I know how to use “index” but I’m wondering if there is another way.

    Because I have other layers in the comp that add to the index number and I was just wondering if there was a way to reference just the layer below (or above) for that matter so that if I were to reorder layers then the relationship between a layer and its below (or above) would remain the same.

    You can get the layer above with index-1 and the layer below with index+1. It doesn’t matter if you add more layers later, it will still work.
