Rendering via AE. I’m taking about 3 minutes worth of h264 files with very little done to them (camera shake) and no audio, and the file is 36 gigs. I know avi’s are supposed to be big, but THAT big? I’ve googled around and it looks like that size is way too large. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks, but that doesn’t really tell me anything about how large my avi file should be.

Really, 36 gigs for 3 minutes of uncompressed AVI isn’t out of the ordinary. Just for fun, I did a 3 minute test on locked down interview shot and it came out to 26 gigs. If you have lots of movement, 36 gigs, doesn’t seem unreasonable.

60 minutes of 1080P 30 frame media is around 500GB to 550Gb or so. So 3 minutes of 1080 30 frame is easily over 32GB.

Ok, thanks guys. I did some more reading and found an alternative. I’m just going to render to PNG’s and either load them as is or put them in an avi container.

I’m running in to the same issue two years later. A client says they need an hour long project also as an AVI…I’m expecting it will render out to over 1 TB. Why are people using AVI over mp4?
