  • I need to use 24p normal footage in a 23.98 timeline!!!

So I have a problem…and it’s sort of a last minute problem. I have part of a project that was shot in 24p advanced that is sitting fully edited in a 23.98 timeline in Final Cut Pro. However, the remaining footage that I have yet to import was shot on 24p normal and needs to be mixed into the 23.98 timeline with the best quality possible.

I’ve been researching and a lot of the time people said that Cinema Tools could solve my problem, and of course I have Cinema Tools–but I have no idea what to do with it.

I’ve never used Cinema Tools before. It’s been sitting on my computer since I got FCP, so I am completely unfamiliar with it.

Does anyone know how to convert 24p normal footage from 29.97 into 23.98 so that I can incorporate it with my 24p advanced project?

    I’d greatly appreciate the help!

    Thanks,
    Michael Sirois

    More system/settings detail please.

When you bring in the 24p have you seen what the browser tells you is the frame rate?

I’m working on a job right now which camera A was 24pn and camera B was 24p and camera B came in at 59.94. Seems to work fine in my 23.98 DVCPRO HD timeline…

    Have a wonderful day.

The footage I’ve already imported is the 24p advanced footage, which shows up as 23.98 and is sitting in a timeline of the same framerate. The 24p normal footage that I need to import runs at 29.97, and when I try to import it into the 23.98 timeline there is a lot of ghosting and strobing.

Yeah, you either need to run it through Cinema Tools or Compressor, sorry.

    Have a wonderful day.

Ok, thanks. Would you happen to know exactly how to do it through Cinema Tools? I opened the program and I just couldn’t figure out how to get the clips into it and then convert them to 23.98 fps.

Cinema tools is very simple – just look at the manual to get started.

You can use the ‘batch conform’ feature in it to convert all your clips to the correct framerate – it will automatically put these in a ‘conformed’ folder with the same names, and your good.

    Don’t be afraid – it’s easy.

I have a bit more information that I left out.

The 24p normal footage runs at 29.97 progressive, and I need to convert this to 23.98 progressive so that it mixes with the footage I shot at 24p advanced.

I’ve heard something about reverse telecine in cinema tools, but I have no idea how to work this, or even if it is the right thing.
