  • I need to upgrade my OS…..how do I collect ALL of the media & project files in FCP?

Posted by Dave Sullivan on July 27, 2006 at 4:18 pm

    Hello all,

I need to upgrade my OS to Tiger, and also upgrade to FCP 5 but I’m not sure what files I need to save so that my FCP projects will work when I load them back on my system.
I know I need the project file, and the media files, are there any other files or folders I need to save?
Any help would be gratefully received.

    All the best

    Dave

    Hi Dave,
Apple make’s the transition very easy for you when you upgrade.
Your FCP project files will update to FCP v5-so you might want to burn a copy of your project files before you upgrade and/or save the projects as a different file (leaving the original intact).
If your media is on a Firewire Drive the drive will work fine, IF you are using a SCSI drive, then you might need to load new drivers with Tiger.

The only thing that get’s me when I upgrade is my plug-ins. I use Boris Red for most of my titles, so I need to reinstall Red before I use FCP.
Depending on the OS upgrade, if you use Archive and Install, you will have a copy of your plug-ins in the ‘old system’ folder. Most of the plug-in you can drag and drop into your new FCP plug-in folder. Just depends on the plug-in (if you even need to)

    Hello Todd,

Thank you so much for your reply. I really wish Apple would address the plug-in problem, but I suppose thats too much to wish for!!!
Many thanks indeed for your help, I will put a post up when the upgrade has been completed…..without too many problems I hope!!!

    All the best

    Hello Todd,

Well all is well, I’ve upgraded to FCP and my OS, and touch wood all is well. My old projects open up OK……but the dreaded plug-in problem is still a pain.
Many thanks again for all of your help.

    All the best

    Dave
