  • I need help! Combine Stereo to Mono in Premiere

Hi. I have a stereo condenser microphone for my my camera, and I want to use it to record ambient noise(stereo), and dialogue(mono) in my movies, but the problem is that it’s a stereo mic so I can’t record in mono.

In adobe premiere, I usually use the fill left or fill right preset in the Audio Effects. That will take one of the channels, and duplicate them so it sounds like mono. But I want to COMBINE both channels, instead of just choosing one of them. There is no effect for that in Premiere.

In Vegas it’s easy, I can just right click the clip, and set the audio channels to “Combine”

is there any way to do this in premiere?

    Hi Ben,

In the project panel, click on the relevant source file, then from the top menu click clip>audio options>source channel mappings. Then change the track option to mono and that should do it.

Make sure the source file isn’t already on the timeline otherwise the source channel mappings window options will all be grayed out.

Fastest Way to correct for this overall is to dedicate a track for Stereo Audio you want to be heard as combined Mono.

Then Add Track to Timeline (Right Click the names of tracks bit in the timeline) set Video to 0 Audio to 0, but Submix to 1 and select Mono. Press OK.

Now go to the Audio Mixer Panel and set the very bottom of the Track you have in Stereo for Mono and set the option under the levels number from Master to the Submix Track. Rename the Submix Track so you know its for Combined St to Mono (just MONO would work).

Whallah. Now when ever you have a clip using the Stereo signal make sure it sits in the Track Dedicated to the Mono Submix and your gold.
