So we all know that if you apply a drop shadow to a graphic it may or may not come out clean. There’s a good chance it’ll cause your image to jump around quite a bit. I ran into this again today and thought “Oh yeah, the drop shadow doesn’t work. Well, I’ll work around it and make a drop shadow with a slug.” So, I made a slug, cropped, feathered, with 50% opacity and put it between the graphic and the background.

My new discovery: the moment you change the edge feather setting under the crop controls on whatever layer you have underneath your graphic, you wind up with the same effect as if you had used a drop shadow: a jittery graphic.

    Frustrating.

    Any thoughts?

Have you tried adding the drop shadow in Boris Red and then using that graphic and drop shadow combo? I don’t have the problem with drop shadows producing jumpy video but using Red might be a work around for your problem.

I can give it a shot – I’m trying a workaround with Photoshop at the moment… we’ll get it one way or the other.

    Thanks for the response!

Photoshop will allow you to add a drop shadow of whatever type you want. The only problem with that solution is that you need to go back to Photoshop to make any adjustments in the drop shadow for depth, softness, etc. Using Boris Red would allow you to interactively change the drop shadow while viewing the result. It’s not as good as being able to change the drop shadow in FCP but it seems to be better than creating the shadow in Photoshop.

BTW, did you ever get the dropped frames problem sorted out with Medea?

dang, apple needs to fix these little problems or disable these options altogether.

who needs crappy looking effects of any kind?

Ahh, ok, I see your point. That makes sense.

Dropped frames? Do you mean the flashing pixels/lines problem? No, we never did get that solved. I’ve e-mailed Medea a couple of times and they are silent to me. I’m thinking of calling ATTO, but haven’t done it yet. We did make a rather big discovery the other day, the flashing pixels are introduced into the video even when merely copying the file from the Medea to an external drive. From that point on they’re permanent, of course.
