    Good one Walter!!!

We must keep drumming this into everyone’s heads. Maybe someday people will actually get it and do it???”

I purchased two 160GB USB 2.0 drives at Costco for under $100 each. One in my suite, the other in JungleLand. They are a complete clone of each room in case they go down. Every night we back up the main projects to a flash drive and the animations / media to a 2TB LaCie FW800 drive.

I just got Studio 2 and will start the install in about an hour, safe in the knowledge that if anything at all goes wrong, all our work is protected and it will take about 2 hours to get the entire system right back where it is right now.

Mine has been shipped and is on its way…

I have a hotswappable system clone on standby at all times. Whenever working with a client I always know I could be back up and running in less than two minutes if necessary.

Everyone on the forum should understand that this is essentially a trade secret we’re sharing and perhaps the single most important thing anyone can do to insure themselves against downtime.

    David and Walter,
Are you saying that before you intstall Studio 2 you will completely wipe out the computer’s hard drive? is that all apps (considereing you have other apps on the system other than FC such as photoshop or after FX?) then re-install these as well?

Also, what is your process of backing up the system, do you just drag the appropriate folders containing your projects, media and other elements pertaining to your projects and then do you just drag your computers home icon to your drive?

Just trying to get some more knowledge and better workflow and back up system in place.

    thanks.

Where were you guys in 1980 when I lost my graduate notes on my Radio Shack TRS-80? Since then, I’ve been pretty good except for the occasional jumping virus that infects the system and backups within a 30 mile radius.

It will be interesting when we start cloning wetware. Our ancestors will not believe that there was a time when we walked out of our homes without making a human backup. In the future, when a reckless land speeder flattens our life pod, they will blame the victim for walking into their kitchen without backing up their DNA to a server on Mars.

Microsoft and Apple were pretty optimistic when they invented the automatic update? As long as we hold the software companies harmless, they will enjoy a certain incompetency.

    Yep yep!

It worked like a charm, I obviously dont know yet what the new bugs, quirks are but so far it works as it should. I cant say the same for Color though. More then a bit flakey. Will do more tests and try to find solutions, color is taking all my time now so I guess I wont take fcp6 s new features for a spin any time soon. Just upgraded qtime and BM drivers. Update. No probs, gotta give an applause to apple for making this stuff so easy.

I’m saying you do this when a new OS comes out, like when Leopard is released later this year. You wipe out the entire hard drive, install the OS, then install all your apps fresh.

[PEYIII] “Also, what is your process of backing up the system, do you just drag the appropriate folders containing your projects, media and other elements pertaining to your projects and then do you just drag your computers home icon to your drive?”

Download Carbon Cloner (it’s free) and tell it to clone to a spare hard drive you keep around just for cloning.

What machine are you using? What graphics card? How much RAM?

Processor and graphics card are key here.

    Walter,
Thanks for the clarification. I’ll download the app and follow this process for now on.
    Thanks again.

    I agree.

From a professional to a professional, I think the lectures about backing up is very, very good advice. But….

If someone decides just to upgrade the “normal” way and has a ton of issues and loses stuff, the buck stops at Apple. No question about it.
