Well, that’s a rather different question…

AVCHD decode is pretty computationally expensive. It’s doable on a fast system, but on a slower system like yours, I’d consider transcoding to an intermediate format like CineForm, DNxHD, or ProRes.

Your computer may be too slow for responsive AVCHD editorial.

Transcode your AVCHD footage to an intermediate format, like CineForm, DNxHD, or ProRes.

These formats take up more disk space, but require less CPU power to decode. They should provide a smoother editing experience than native AVCHD.

The Mercury Playback Engine has a software-only mode for systems that do not have a compatible graphics card.

Mercury Playback Engine, with a compatible CUDA or OpenCL GPU, can be hardware accelerated. This will help with the processing of transforms and effects, but it will not help with decoding AVCHD. In other words, adding an MPE-approved GPU may not give you the performance boost I assume you’re looking for.
