(as the actress said to the bishop.)

    Hi All –

You may file this under ‘obvious’, but… I am importing a load of clips of rostrum footage, and I don’t need the sound, just the video. Once I’ve set my in and out in the Viewer, I feel there ought to be a way of dragging just the video (minus audio) to the timeline by shift/alt/cmd dragging. Or whatever.

Does anyone know if there’s a shortcut for this?

Also is there an easy way to un-link and delete the audio out of a clip in the browser / bins? Have tried various browser view options (the anamorphic tickbox has that kind of functionality in the browser for example).

Currently am dragging clips to a free area of timeline, alt-selecting the audio and deleting…

dis-engage the audio tracks before you bring the clip in.

Have you run the Tutorials that come with FCP or looked in the Final Cut Pro Basics forum?

I don’t know about dragging clips, but when you make an OVERWRIGHT or INSERT edit either with a keyboard shortcut or dragging a clip from the VIEWER to the CANVAS, simply click on you audio tabs on your timeline. This disconnects your source from your destination and when you make the edit only your video will appear on your timeline. Hope this helps.

Thanks chaps – I think the answer to my question is ‘no’…

I can see why you might have rolled your eyes at my question Walter, but disengaging the audio tracks (which I am proud to say is already part of my skillset) is too many clicks – I have 4 audio tracks enabled / tabbed (working from P2 cards with 4 tracks of audio which are needed elsewhere in the project.)

If I click all 4 audio tabs that’s 8 x clicks to get them disengaged then re-engaged, plus the drag-and-drop.

If leave the audio track tabs alone, and drag and drop the clip on an empty area of timeline then alt-select the 4 x audio tracks and hit delete/backspace that’s only three clicks/keystrokes.

But don’t you agree it would be handy to be able to do a qualified drag/drop with clips from the browser/viewer that left the audio behind?

I honestly never think about it. Nor do I worry about how many clicks it takes to do things. Never quite understood that one. “It takes too many clicks.” Maybe because I use a tablet and haven’t used a mouse in about 10 years, but clicks don’t bother me at all.

There is a keyboard shortcut to disable the audio, but it’s only for the first two audio tracks. I think by default it’s Shift-F7 for track 1 and Shift-F8 for track 2.

I have a utility on my website to strip out extra audio tracks from video clips. It won’t get you any hard drive space back, but I have to agree that it’s annoying to have to disable all those tracks individually if you wind up with too many audio tracks for some reason.

You can do it with one keystroke:
Shift-F5 to lock the audio tracks

Then there’s no way the source clip audio will go into the sequence, no matter how your track patching is set.
