  • I can’t get audio levels to record voice over in FCP 7

    Hello,

I am new to this forum and newish to FCP (my bg is avid).

Please forgive me in advanced if this turns out to be a dumb mistake on my part. I’ve searched already in the forum and was not able to solve my issue.

I am trying to set up the FCP system I am working on to record temp V.O.
I have a mic with an XLR connector.I don’t know anymore about the mic than that.
The system is running thru AJA Kona 3 and it has a mackie 1402 hooked up as well.
As I understood, I am supposed to hook up the mic to the mixer and have phantom power on. I am able to get sound from the mic to the speakers, but I cannot get any levels in FCP or sound to record neither in voice over tool nor capture mode.
Our project is set up as XDCAM HD at 23.98 as most of our footage has been shot on a SonyF800.
When using capture mode, I don’t know what capture preset to use. I tried many of them (there are A LOT of choices) and none worked.
In voice over tool: I tried built in, line in, aja kona and whatever else I had as an option.
I set my system preferences under sound to aja kona for audio input. Is that correct?
I’m sure it is some setting or combination of settings or something in the mixer I haven’t tried.
    Please help.

Oh, I also tried to record in QT and could not get any levels or sound to record there either. Ugh. What am I doing wrong?

thank you in advanced for the feedback.

    Maria,

Using an analog mic with a digital card such as the Kona 3 is pretty much a royal pain. On the other hand, using a USB mic with VO tool in FCP is a piece of cake. I know it’s not what you want to hear, but I assure you, you will never be able to use the VO tool efficiently unless you get a USB mic. Something like a Blue Snowball costs just $99, sounds great, and works pretty much automatically VO tool by just plugging in.

I concur. The Kona 3 doesn’t have analogue inputs so to use an analogue mic you would need to buy extra kit to convert the signal.

We use USB mics in all our FCP suites – The SE USB2200A. The Samson C01U is also a good USB mic.

A quick and cheap solution is to use the Line-in mini-jack port on the back of the mac. But you may then run into problems with line/mic levels. The USB mic is the more elegant solution.

Thank you both so much! It’s nice to know I’m not a total moron, I thought it had to do with the Kona 3. I will get a hold of a usb mic.
