August 18, 2009 at 3:16 pmNEVER assume, KNOW. Select the drive on the desktop and do a “Get Info” and it will tell you how it was formatted.
Most drives are formated for WIndows DOS out of the box unless you are buying from a Mac store or Macsales. To reformat you have to delete everything on the drive no way around that.

August 18, 2009 at 3:39 pmthankyou Micheal, My mini drive is macOS Extended (journaled) and so is the WD drive BUT the Maxtor is MS-DOS (FAT32)..so is that the problem? unfortunately that is the drive that has my historical and family video saved on it. not the project I’m doing now. can I copy that stuff (174GB) over to the other drives?
and since that drive is in the chain, that could be the foul up causing QT to shut down my macbook?thankyou all! Brad

I guess I should pull that drive from the chain and see if it clears up the problem then?
I’m going out for a motorcycle ride to clear my head!thankyou all! Brad

August 19, 2009 at 10:44 pmwent to the Genius bar and booted from another drive and my macbook still shut down when doing a QT conversion. He says that means it is NOT a software issue.. blames the logic bd..
the console says previous shut down cause: 3… He said that was a code for shutting down by holding the button for 4 seconds and got all puzzled about that.
