I am trying to import video from a tape deck but optimize media is not highligted as a choice
These will be my new original files, I cannot just import as proxy which is the only copy. Does anyone know how to make the optimized media option light up?

When working with tapes, there is not better option than working “native”, so with the original stuff, as it is on tape. No need to optimize nothing.
On editing can be interesting to export to a higher quality codec.

In other words, when Optimize is greyed out FCPX has determined that there will be no benefit to optimizing the video. If you import with neither optimize or proxy selected, it will come in as native.
Basically your good to go with what you have.
