I am Curious — Yellow, Cyan, Green…
So kicking the tyres of Speedgrade, now that CS6 is installed, and to throughly mix the metaphor, stepping into the batter’s box and taking a few swings.
So far the count is 0-2.
Strike One is (you’re kidding me) no external SDI support for AJA/Blackmagic?
Strike Two is, why would Speedgrade NOT be able to use the same IP addresses (eg. 192.168.1.101,2,3) as Apple COLOR for my expensive Tangent 200-series panels? Seems like that would have been a plus. Or what am I missing, because there are some knuckleballs in this application’s configuration.
So, this is a pitcher’s count… looking for some advice, notwithstanding… this would actually be useful, or I’m as they say “out”.

Can you believe that? Only support for external monitor via a specific graphics card. Seriously, how can you grade without viewing on a broadcast monitor? That’s not grading…that guessing.

Ha ha you are right. But hell, Im in better physical shape now then I was back then. 20 years of swimming laps will do that. So Im am old and bold. 😀

Only support for external monitor via an insanely expensive, specific and kinda rare graphics card.

I’ll mix the metaphor even further — I think for most users, the current release of SpeedGrade gets a punt. Adobe just acquired IRIDAS in September, so there hasn’t been a lot of time to integrate it with Adobe workflows and technologies like CS6’s Mercury Transmit for I/O.
I don’t know what they’re planning for the future, but Adobe seems to be aware that the divide between SpeedGrade and the rest of the suite (or perhaps the rest of the world?) needs attention.
I’m curious, Joseph — what’s drawing you to investigate SpeedGrade now if you weren’t using it before?

More or less pure professional curiousity — like going to see a production to see just how “bad” or “good” it is after reading the critics’ reviews. Also another local facility is using it, and of course, when it arrived with my Production Premium package, its like getting a defecting MiG to analyze.
It might turn out to be an advantage to use as another option if PremierePro gains any traction and Adobe works out a workflow for it that makes it incompatible or uncomfortable for Resolve roundtripping. And to be able to talk intelligently about an application — (notwithstanding the FCX debacle), and maybe wring another few minutes of use out of my Tangent 200 panels, which is looking less likely.
This all does seem to be rather reminiscent of Apple not knowing what to do with Final Touch when they got it and decided to just toss it in the popcorn box as a free prize. At least they got the XML to work. Yeehaw.
Just another veiled insult to colorists by the manufacturers as to exactly how much respect they really have for the discipline.

Understood — I’m pretty much in the same boat.

I have a lot more faith in Adobe to take care of video pros than I do in Apple. Just as it took some time for Adobe’s purchase of Syntrillium/Cool Edit Pro to become integrated as Audition, SpeedGrade will need some time to fit into the Creative Suite, too.
Adobe only had 6 months with IRIDAS — but see this post from Dennis Radeke [link] about what they did get done in that time.
I don’t mean to wave my pom-poms too wildly here, but based on the improvements Adobe has made in the last few CS releases, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with Sg, noodle a bit with it now, and re-evaluate at the next major release cycle.

UPDATE. It can (set up a root IP address, eg. 192.168.1.100) but you must use “Manually” in the Apple network configuration, NOT “Using DHCP with manual address”. You have to completely shut down DHCP, which I am guessing hasn’t been a problem for most dedicated system users up to this point.
