I am changings still pictures form Jpeg to Png.
Posted by Donald Gibson on February 18, 2013 at 5:54 pmI saw where John and some people had a conversation on this some time back, but for the life of me I can’t fine it. Sorry.
I am changings still pictures form Jpeg to Png.
I am using Vegas Pro 8. I am Rending to Architect Pro. 4.5b. the setting are DVD NTSC 29.97fps, 720×480. My pictures are 3008×2000, I resize this to 1440×720. Is this OK or should I consider another setting? If so what?
The next thing is that I am using a picture that is 2000×3008 and have no idea what to change this setting too. What would you suggest?
These are all still pictures. Could I change the render DVD NTSC setting to DVD Architect NTSC widescreen video stream? Would this work with what I am doing?
Thanks

February 18, 2013 at 6:11 pmFor 720×480 videos, I use a crop setting of 1310 x 960 pixels. This setting yields a photo which has no visible black bars in the video. A higher resolution can be used, but the horizontal/vertical relationship must be preserved to avoid the black bars.

That’s not OK because 720×480 NTSC video does not use square pixels and your images do. You need to compensate for this. If you are not zooming into them you should use 655 x 480. If you plan to zoom in then I would recommend double that Bob suggested (1310 x 960).

You want to crop them to be the same. The key is to get your images that same aspect ratio as your video which is 4:3. If you want to include the entire vertical image then you may need to place them on a colorful 4:3 background so that you don’t have black borders.

February 18, 2013 at 9:02 pmJust out of curiosity, why are you converting the pics to .png? Unless you’re needing to keep a transparent alpha channel?

You’re welcome Don but I’m quite a bit older than my picture which is me way back when I was 40. I really need to take a new pic and replace it with something more current. But I’ll take the compliant anyway… on the Internet… no one knows that your old! lol.

Danny first of all thanks you for responding.
Just remember that you are dealing with a novice here. First of all I don’t know what a transparent alpha channel is let alone if I need it or not. Sorry.
As to why I am changing my pictures to png? I am now quoting Douglas Spotted Eagle in his book. Vegas Pro 8. Page 124. “For best results save sill images, graphics, or titles created outside of Vegas at 655×480/150dpi (NTSC). If you plan on zooming deeply into a photograph, consider doubling the resolution, or creating images a t 1310×960.” Files should be saved as portable network graphics (PNG) files for optimum use in Vegas.”
I understand I am using 1440×720 which my converted likes.
Too me you seem to advocate that I can use Jpeg pictures. I would like to use Jpeg pictures. Would I get the same results as png? If so what should the setting be for a picture (Jpeg) that is 3008X2000?
Thanks

February 19, 2013 at 11:56 pmThat is my understanding as well. Vegas loves PNGs. I would NEVER save a jpeg using a jpeg format. Jpegs lose resolution each time they are saved.
