  • hw to increase scene speed w/o changing voice pitch

I have a pre-edited, slowly acted scene that I want to speed up 15% to 20%. Is there a simle way to speed up the video while keeping correct voice pitch?

    Thanks in advance,

You will have to slow it down first, and then attempt to readjust the pitch. Final Cut has a Pitch Filter, but I haven’t had great results with it. It that doesn’t work, you can take it over to Soundtrack Pro and see what you can do there.

Protools Le has a series of pitch plugins that will help you with the issue.
I used a while ago and worked pretty well.

I’ve done pitch shifting of announcers in soundtrack several time with positive results.

Bring track into Soundtack. Choose Process>Effects>Miscellaneous>Pitch Shifter II
There will be a window with controls on it. Select Mix 100% then adjust Semi tones and Cent to taste.

    Good Luck,

You can also use the Time Strech feature of SoundTrack to either stretch or shrink the time.

I just want to point out the the audio will no longer be in synch with the video in any of theses methods, if that matters.

15- 20% is a lot to correct. In my experience the best time dilate/ pitch tool is MPEX3 software which is often part of Pyramix audio systems. I have gone 10% on speech without problems. The way to do it is to speed your video clips up, export the audio as an OMFI and then change the pitch back to normal with the MPEX3 software. Export as aifs and drop back into the sequence. Better still, mix the dialog and export an aif mix file. Pyramix is a great mix tool with good EQ and dynamics.

Protools pitch & time is said to be good, but I know a facility with this software and they sent a telemovie to me to be pitch corrected with the MPEX3 software so they thought it better than Protools. I haven’t used the Soundtrack Pro time tools.

There’s always the old fashioned way of speeding up a scene – editing…

    Thanks for the responses.

Looks like prosonqix has a stand alone app called Time Factory that specializes in this. You can punch in the number of frames (NOT the percentage change) and it will change the time to that exact number of frames. Presumably, since the frame count will match from the video to the time factory output, sync will be maintained.

Of course its $399. Oh well.

    Thanks again for the info

Prosoniq make the MPEX3 software that I mentioned being part of a Pyramix system. The stand alone app is the same software and it is the best.
