The Panasonic HVX200 shoots in a 1.33 aspect ratio (meaning 960×720 instead of 1280 x 720 in a square pixel aspect ratio).

Should I keep this aspect ratio or should I interpret the footage to square pixels at the beginning of a project?

The DVCPROHD pre-sets within PPro are only for 1.33.

Is there any consequence to creating a custom pre-set with the square pixel ratio aspect and then interpreting the footage as such?

Or do most of you convert it upon final export? Or even not at all?

Just a bit confused as to how i should be doing this. i prefer the square pixel aspect ratio because it looks more natural – but I don’t want to compromise any fidelity.

My final exports are to web and DVD (both Blu-ray and SD).

Thank for any insight on this matter.

The real advantage in working with 1.33 is that you won’t need to render, since you are then working in a native timeline.

Of course, rendering may not be of any importance if you are working on fast workstation.

Problems may arise if you are using an external preview however (Aja, Decklink have poor support beyond NTSC, PAL formats).

I often end up in 1:1 anyway since most of my footage has to go through AE, and you would want to work in square pixels there.

    Thanks Vince,

Most of my stuff ends up going through AE as well. I also work with a 3D guy and he gets grouchy when things get complicated so I have been going with Square Pixels from the beginning of the editing process. Thanks again for your insight into this.
