Am in the process of sorting out which low end HD camera to buy for an upcoming high end industrial project.
Going in I had been thinking of the HVX200 since I already own a 100a, have been satisfied with the results from this camera and I could matriculate some assessories to this new camera.
I have now called two major discount operations with whom I have done business in the past and they both advised me to buy to V1U.
Looking at it from a cost and hassle standpoint, I can’t disagree with them. Getting those P2 cards from the field into my edit system seems cumbersome and will add cost.
However, I do note that the HVX200 has the 720 settings (the V1U does not) which is attractive to some cable channels.
Is that enough to push me back into the camp of the HVX200? Are there other considerations that would win me back to the HVX200 over the V1U?
    Thanks for your thoughts.

The HVX shoots 81 formats of video. From DV to DVCPRO 50 to DVCPRO HD 720p and 1080i…and many frame rates of each. VERY versatile. Also…shoots to the DVCPRO HD 4:2:2 colorspace…while HDV is limited to 4:2:0 chroma sampling, which no one denies is INFERIOR.

Don’t like P2 cards? Get a Firestore or Cineporter…hard drives that attach and give you longer record times.

    Frank,

Rent before you. I second the HVX-200.

Don’t cheat your client with a low end HD camera for a so called high end project. If you are doing professional projects, don’t shoot with Consumer cameras.

If you want to go the cheap way, shoot with your DVX-100 and upres your project with Compressor. It’s very time compsuming and the quality is not as good, but from the sounds of it, you’ll save a lot of money.

FYI, PBS will reject your HDV projects for broadcast.

Not a proper comparison imho. If you want the camera from Sony’s line that is more of a match to the HVX200 you want the new PMWEX1 shooting in XDCAM EX.

Of course that camera is not even out yet so we don’t have a lot of workflow setups the way we do with the HVX and pricing is different. If you want to have cheaper HDV- go with the V1U but it’s not in the same league.

    HVX-200 has got bigger chip..1/3′ not 1/4′.
HVX-200 has got better formats and better built quality.
HVX-200 has got better camera controls.
HVX-200 has got better colour matrix and you can shoot both on tape or P2 or even hard drive.

V1 has got better flip screen and fully auto AGC(audio),which can be handy.

Sony V1 is not as good as Sony Z1 and Sony Z1 is not as good as Pana HVX-200 🙂

The EX is still a long GOP format isn’t it Noah? If so, I don’t see it as the equivalent of an I-frame based HD format like the HVX…

    I ain’t Noah…but I’ll answer.

Yes, it is a GOP format. ALL XDCAM formats are GOP…HDV is the baby brother to XDCAM…so…GOP.

The Cineporter was dropped from production.

    Hi Mitch-

How’s it going? Did you re-certify btw?

Yup it’s long gop and another new proprietary Sony format. But if there were a camera intended from the Sony side to compare to the HVX that would be it. Not saying it would win the comparison of course. 🙂

If you want a higher resolution picture, go for the V1U. The HVX200 has a limiting resolution of only 500 lines. The V1U is around 800 lines. The upcoming EX1 is over 1000 lines. In a direct A-B comparison, there is significantly more detail in the V1U images as compared to the HVX200.
