  • HVX on the way… need to get my edit machine ready

    Hi,

I’ve got an HVX-200 on the way and I need to get prepped so I can edit DVCProHD. I’ll be monitoring on a Panny BT-LH1700W and editing on my Mac Pro, but I have no capture/output card as of yet. I’m coming from the mini-DV firewire world and up to this point I have just firewired from the Mac to my DV deck then out to my monitor. I’m assuming that’s not going to work with HD. I would like a solution that will allow me to view my DVCProHD work in HD, but also be able to downconvert to SD on the fly. I don’t think I need any Pro-Res capabilities as I’d like to edit native DVCProHD, but maybe I’m missing something. So what are my options? Thanks for the help!

    http://www.aja.com – Kona LHe and Kona 3

http://www.decklink.com – Decklink Extreme HD, Decklink Multibridge

http://www.matrox.com – Matrox MXO (output only, but as you are importing via P2, you don’t capture anything)

All will output HD…all will downconvert HD to SD in realtime. Some will upconvert SD to HD, some will cross convert 720p to 1080p on the fly. Look at all of them and see which best suits your needs.

One alternative that comes to mind is the new motu box V3HD. It works nativly dvcpro hd and can up down cross convert on the fly. Downside: nothing above dvcprohd and costs 2K+

A cheaper option is the new blackmagic card intensity pro. You can view hdmi or analog out from FCP or Premiere for only $330. Downside: Dvcprohd support is on the way, you have to cross convert everything to blackmagic codec 1080p 10bit (1 GB dvcprohd becomes 12 GB). Desktop only.

There ofcourse is the AJA IOHD but you already said you donot need prores.

I am sure more people will add many other options, but it’s a start.

PS: When you receive your HVX with the power off slowly tilt it forward and then back. If it “clunks”, you’re good.

Good Luck and enjoy your HVX.

    Thanks Shane,

Looking at the Decklink and the Kona, neither seems to support 720p23.98. My plan is to shoot at 720p24, edit in the same and down convert to SD for broadcast. What am I missing here?

    Thanks Emre,

Why do I want a “clunk”?

the Spec for 720p is either 60fps or 50 fps.

there is NO SMPTE spec for 720p 24/ 23.98 delivery.

While I prefer the Kona, both are capable of handling 720p24 content and delivering it to a variety of devices.

Trust us- once you get the camera you’ll understand. And it’s perfectly normal.

23.98 is a problem as intensity pro will not support it as well.

I am not sure about Motu as it is very new and I have seen to few reviewa. But if you call them with questions they take your name and somebody calls back within 15min to answer all your questions.

For me it was a choice; Either dump 720PN and pay for storage (10K)or keep 720PN and upgrade from AVID Mojo to AVID adrenaline(40K). I dumped my avid.

“If it dont clunk, then it’s junk”. If I m not mistaken (and correct me please) the OIS mirror is in loose mode when it is powered down. If it does not move, you’re in trouble.

Of course, in a low end way, you could forgo the capture/output card for now and use firewire for ingest. I did that for my first couple of HVX projects and it was OK for them. Now, we’re all Kona 3 and such. But even still, all I use the Kona for is monitoring and then outputting to digibeta or whatever the client wants. I use a card reader for ingest.

But you can’t monitor via firewire, can you?

Not that I’m aware of, but the first 2 projects we did were pretty low-end and didn’t need it. We just used Desktop Cinema preview. ‘Twere web projects, they were 🙂
