January 3, 2008 at 6:13 pmI think a Kona 3 rocks if you can afford it and you’re going to do things like color correction with a good HD monitor.

January 3, 2008 at 6:22 pmOK jason…let’s nip this in the bud before you start.
What will you be delivering? What format? Digibeta? HDCAM? DVD? What will be your final mastering format? This determines what frame rate you shoot. Please do NOT shoot 23.98 just because you want the “film look.” YOu can achieve this by shooting 24p at 29.97 as well.
As for monitoring, you never monitor at 23.98…DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 is monitored at 59.94 believe it or not. 23.98 monitoring is possible with the Kona (I know because I have done it), but it flickers and strobes so much, it is unwatchable for long periods of time. Pros don’t do this…they monitor at the compression rate of the medium, which is 59.94.

January 3, 2008 at 10:40 pmDepending on the project; Beta SP, Digibeta, DVD and/or various web formats. I think I finally hear you on the 24p at 29.97. You’re shooting 24p and the cam is adding pulldown on the fly to get to 29.97. Sounds good unless you’re shooting for compositing or chroma keying.
