    Hey gang…

I’m looking at purchasing this combo to do an extremely small budget feature. I have some question, though… What HD modes can this camera do with this external drive? Is it only 720p or can it do 1080p?

It won’t do any native streams over firewire.

    Wayne…

It’ll do 1080i and 1080p30 as well as 720p60 and 720p30. Those are the ones I’ve recorded so far. I haven’t tried any other format such 24p.

It’ll record 1080/24p, 1080/24pa, 1080/30p, 1080/60i, and 720/60p, 720/30p, 720/24p with or without variable frame rates. Only restriction is that you’ll have to run the variable-frame-rate footage through a frame extraction utility in order to use it as VFR footage (same process as what you have to do with VariCam footage).

    Thank you, Barry…

That was the answer I was looking for. Doing low budget features can be tough when your budget is extremely low. We have to start somewhere…

Hello Marian,The Firestore fan can make a little noise when it first starts up and when it’s been on for a while (or when its been sitting in direct hot sun for a while). i have the Firestore holster that focus enhancements sells but sometimes the mics can pick up the fairly quite fan on the FS-100. To get around this i have been using the Jimmy Box 2 which was originally designed for use with wireless mics but just happens to fit the FS-100 perfectly. You can check it out Here https://www.jimmybox.com/Hope this helps out. Regards Stuart Cummings Watermark Productions

    Hi! FAntastic!

Didn’t know you could do VFR with the FS.

What do you use, when on Mac. XP coud be an option, too..

How does the jimmy box help you with sound dampening?? It looks like a nice mount, but I have had the FS-100 cable 6 ft. away from the camera and you still get the fan noise. Is there another piece to the jimmy box that insulates the Firestore??

Hi Christopher, The Jimmy box was originally designed for wireless mics the Firestore just happens to fit perfectly so a lot of shooters have adopted it for use with the Firestore devices. As far as i know there are no additional dampening devices available for it you might email or call Jimmy and see what he has or what are his thoughts are. He is a working DP and originally build the box for himself. The Jimmy box helps move the Firestore away from the camera mics instead of the saddle that Focus sells as an accessory (which positions the Firestore fan directly over the mics). Its worked quite well for me, and i don’t seem to pick the fan noise very often (my fan does not run all the time) Is the Jimmy box the perfect solution probably not but it is a huge improvement over what focus sells. At some point i am sure Focus or someone else will come up with an even better solution in the mean time it is a great wireless mic holder and a decent Firestore bracket! If anyone has come up with a better solution please by all means let us know!! Lets hope the forthcoming and long awaited Cineporter is quieter (since its going to mount directly under the HVX200). For more info about my experience’s with the Firestore and the accessories that i have been using and my use of the Firestore in an underwater housing check out the Sept. issue of Studio Monthly Magazine I’m supposed to be on the cover shooting underwater with the HVX 200 and Firestore.Which is a whole other story!!! Good luck Stuart Cummings Watermark Productions
