HPX371 VS HPX250 for Wildlife (some questions!!!)
Hi,
I need a camera for some documentary work about wild animals in my region (mainly birds).
I need a camera with broadcast quality 10bit, 422, 100mbs, so probably will buy one of these two cameras.
The cameras have almost equal specs, so I need to know from people who have use them some things like for instance the quality of image at end zoom range, overall sharpness and some other aspects you might consider important.
Also need to know, if using in the HPX371 a 1/3″ nikon G mount adapter, will be able to use nikon lens, for instance a 70-200mm f/2.8, without significant loss of quality getting a substantial increase of zoom range (490-1400)

These two cams are basically identical. HPX250 has a fixed lens. That’s the only real difference. Forget the Nikon lens. Only ENG lenses will work with the 370/371. You’ll have serious issues trying to use a DSLR lens. I prefer the smaller cams but it really comes down to how big a zoom range you need. 250 had 22x optical, 371 has 17x with the stock Fuji lens so I’d only go with the 371 if you plan on spending big bucks for a better lens with a 2x extender. Zoom on the 250 is EXTREMELY SLOW. I’ve used both and prefer the 250 but it does take some getting used too. It’s got a very “plastic” feel and I’m not sure how well it would hold up in extreme conditions. I also have a Sony NX5U and its solid, metal casing, a bit heavier, but very robust and holds up great.

I don´t need a shoulder camera cause I will ude it mainly on a tripod, but I saw a video on you tube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mIu1wamer4) of a sigma 70-400mm mounted on a HPX370 and the quality wasn´t bad, not as good as the fujinon 17x, but not bad for a youtube compressed video, and the sigma 70-200mm is not as sharp as the nikon 70-200mm.
I only intend to use the nikon 70-200mm in situations where I realy need more reach, in other cases will use the stock lens.
Can someone tell me how is the quality of both lens at full zomm?
If buy the 250 will save at least 2000€, but I’m affraid that even the 22X reach of the 250 will not be enought in some situations for aquatic birds that I have to film…

I own the 370 and that video sample you posted is impressive.
Are both the 250 and the 370 equally easy to put that lens on and off while you’re out in the field?

I’m not shure if I understand your question, but in the hpx370 you just have to remove the stock lens, put the adapter and them put the nikon lens.

Right, but is the 250 as easy to do this?
Easy of use in the field should factor in your buying decision too.
The quality difference is arguably null between the 2 cams.Chris

I think that the 250 might not be able to take nikon lens, I’m not shure, but I don’t know any adapter that might be stucked to the front of the 250 lens, if this is the case, you will only be able to use the camera 22x lens.
For me in the field, the 250 will be easy to use, cause is smaller and weigths less, but for more reah will need the 370, nikon lens and adapter, overal costs will be much higher, thats why I realy don’t if I should pic up the 250 or the 370…
