I just Directed a feature shot with 2 HPX 500 cameras and I have to say the camera and the P2 workflow was quite smooth. We had an HVX 200 standing by that we threw up as a third camera from time to time. Our capture set up was 1 macpro with an express card adapter and an older mac that had the correct slot. We shot both 8 and 16 gig cards without any issues. We did not use P2 Genie rather set up our own naming conventions and workflow.

We had some fairly dark sets and the exposure on the low end is fantastic. The camera went up on a Technocrane and we had a few days of Steadicam as well. Throw in some greenscreen days and some fairly heavy visual effects shots and I’d say we definitely put this camera through the paces.

I had considered shooting Varicam for the ability to go off speed but we ended up shooting our off speed set ups at 720 while the rest of the film was shot 1080i on the advice of our post facility who had vigorously tested this camera. This did of course lead to needing much more storage space on the server and cut down shooting time but we didn’t run into issues spanning cards thankfully.

I hope this information is helpful, I have found this forum to be a great asset and am happy to have something to say that may make your process a bit easier.

Now get out there and shoot!

Very cool- please post a link to your movie’s website whenever it’s up. 🙂

Did you up-res the 720 footage to 1080… or did you down-res the 1080 stuff?

Would be great to know what lens setup you used. Did you use any of the CAC lenses at all.

I will end up uprezing the 720 footage eventually. I have some pretty trick retiming software and my plan is to actually ramp the footage instead of having it play at a constant frame rate.

We used DigiPrimes-I’ll check with my DP for the exact set up.
