  • How would you want it delivered to FCP?

Posted by Brett Nolan on June 15, 2009 at 8:16 am

I know I’m in dangerous territory here, but I have a Windows based video editing system, it is the only system I have and it rocks…for me. Just thought I’d get that out there as to avoid the “get a mac” comments I have so recently received elsewhere.

    Question:
I have captured a clients 1080i HDV footage to my machine as 1440×1080-60i 25.000fps M2T files, now… I would like to know in what absolute format would you, as FCP/Mac users, instruct or request those files be delivered to you, if you were the intended recipient for further editing, as data on a compatible medium and as to make it simple for their import into FCP with minimal, if not absolutely zero quality loss whatsoever.

    meaning…

    1. Can you read M2T files?
    2. If so do you have to have the MPEG-2 goodies for quicktime?
    3. If I converted them to the same specs as above in an MPEG-4/ H264 format would they require any further compression or alteration prior to being imported to your timeline for editing?

    thanks in advance

    Brett

[Brett Nolan] “1. Can you read M2T files? “

Requires conversion software on the user’s end.

[Brett Nolan] “3. If I converted them to the same specs as above in an MPEG-4/ H264 format would they require any further compression or alteration prior to being imported to your timeline for editing? “

MPEG-4/H.264 is NOT an editing codec. That is a final delivery codec.

All files must be a Quicktime in order for FCP to handle. As it was HDV footage originally, keeping it all in the native HDV codec would have been the most simple way to handle it.

[Brett Nolan] “1. Can you read M2T files?”

Nope. As Walter said, FCP needs Quicktime.

[Brett Nolan] “2. If so do you have to have the MPEG-2 goodies for quicktime? “

No. Well, yes, for some things, but that goodie won’t work with the M2T file you are talking about.

[Brett Nolan] “3. If I converted them to the same specs as above in an MPEG-4/ H264 format would they require any further compression or alteration prior to being imported to your timeline for editing? “

Yes. They would need to be transcoded to ProRes…and there would be a pretty significant quality loss from TWO encodes. Not to mention the all important timecode would be gone from the first encode you do to H.264.

I want QT files. PhotoJPEG might work…trying to think at the offerings PCs have for Macs. Not much. This is why it is never advisable to capture on one NLE for use on another, especially cross platform.

For just 49 bucks “ClipWrap” brings your m2t files to the FC time line. No rendering, just re-wrapping.

I downloaded this plugin for free and it works great. I use a sony Z7 and the m2t files are uploaded into fcp auotomatically when you go to “Transfer and Capture”

    Check it out
