How Would I do a Varicam Offline
I’m working with a post facility that has a ton of Varicam and HDV footage they want to compile on a shared storage system for editing offline programing.
Most of the footage was shot at 720p60 or HDV1080i. What codec in final cut pro can I use to edit the offline footage with out having to render or have frame rate issues later when I do the online? Or if anyone has a suggested work flow for this problem I would love to hear it.

If you import the footage via firewire you will have to render at least one of the formats as FCP does not allow mixed formats on the timeline. Your best bet would be to work in the DVCPro HD codec, which is the native format of the varicam, and use a capture card to capture the HDV footage into the same codec. If your frame rate is 23.98, the space required for this is only about 32GB per hour. Then you wouldn’t need to do an online.

My original frame rate on the varicam is 60fps. And they have a ton of material they want to put on the shared storage. Is there a way to digitize that footage in that would save space and if so what codec would work with out creating a frame rate issue?
I know that the varicam emulates 60fps but what is the actual frame rate it is shooting at? Can I use the OfflineRT HD codec 29.97 (photo JPEG codec) in Final Cut? Or will the frame rate between the 60 and 29.97 have issues when I redigitize for the online?

It has many frame rates it can shoot at so before you go any further you need to find that out from the production. You also need to find out your delivery specs so you can make an informed decision as to your workflow. It’s not really any use asking can this be done or that be done, ’cause there are many ways you can do something. The first question you have to ask is what do you want as the end result, then you work back from there to achieve the best workflow for your situation.
