I haven’t tried it, but you might want to look into Resizer by Digital Anarchy.

    Thanks.

But is it possible to do it within AE or Magic Bullet?

Of course. Drop the SD comp into an HD comp and scale up. But to make it actually look good, you need special algorithms, and AE don’t got ’em. You need to go “third-party”.

    Don’t know about MB.

Check out ReSizer in our Anarchy Toolbox plugin set:

    https://digitalanarchy.com/toolbox/toolbox_main.html

It provides a number of different algorithms for scaling footage, usually giving you a much better result than AE’s built-in scaling. Kevan O’brian of Adobe UK was showing off some footage of a TV movie he recently completed that used Resizer to go from SD to HD. It looked great and the director was very happy with the results.

We’re trying to get the rights to put it up on the digitalanarchy.com web site, but as usual it’s like pulling teeth.

But you can download the demo from the site and try it yourself.

    cheers,
    Jim

Not to take Jim’s wind away from him… as I’m sure he makes a fine product. But an alternative would be Algoloth’s CAS (Content Adaptive Scaling) plug-in. They also have good noise reduction and anti-aliasing tools.

They have a weekly license for $50.

These plug-ins are render intensive, so make sure you have a decent computer.

Oh… and my tip of the day is…

    ALT-SHIFT-CTRL-H

or as I call it… Mash-H. If you drop a SD clip into a HD comp, select the layer and hit this hot key. It will scale the layer to exactly fit into the comp.
