How to stabilize part of a LONG clip
Posted by Ariel Brener on October 31, 2010 at 4:03 pmI have a one hour interview.
I want to use SmoothCam to stabilize a 10 sec portion of this 1 hour clip.
Problem is that when I use SmoothCam is starts analyzing the entire 1 hour file…
I don’t know why Apple made this effect work this way.. but please tell me what to do?
thanks!

October 31, 2010 at 4:11 pmEither purchase Lock and Load, a third part app, or export the portion you want to stabilize and reimport back to the timeline, then apply Smoothcam.

October 31, 2010 at 5:19 pmAs Steve says… The proceedure is to mark an in and out, the Export>>QuickTime Movie using current settings, with the self contained box checked. That should always be used to create whatever export you might want that precisely matches all or part of your timeline. It’s not even down a generation…

FCP is today a rather ancient (in computer terms) bunch of cobbled together code, to which Apple’s software engineers have added feature upon feature, which have enabled us to do just about anything possible in post, though some things do of course require workarounds. Perhaps someday soon, when those same engineers get around to a modern rewrite, much of we now do with workarounds will be flawlessly and more precisely implemented. Until that time however, ours is not to question why, ours is but to do or die…
