  • How to setup an AFX project for a 35mm film out?

    Hello CreativeCOW community,
I’m editing a short film shot on 35mm at an aspect ratio of 1.85.
It’s been edited on Avid Media Composer Adrenaline and now the director wants
a 30sec 2D animation at the beginning, using After Effects.
The goal is to do a Digital Intermediate and ULTIMATELY a 35mm print.

I have offer my help to do the animation but I have a few concerns:
    1. How should I set up the New Composition in After Effects?
    2. Once the animation is done, what export settings should I choose?
    3. and, Is there anything else I should pay attention to?

Any advice I’ll gladly appreciate, Thanks.
    Miguel

35mm is 2k or 4k depending on your rig or your lab’s requirements. Find out long before you start work.
4k and 2k are standard presets in AE.
Beware, 4k is an unbelievably HUGE work area, roughly 4000 by 3000 pixels. That’s 12,000,000 pixels that have to get rendered for EVERY FRAME.
