  • How to set firm boundaries for text in After Effects

I’m typing a bunch of text into a Text layer in my composition.
I would like the boundaries of the text to be the borders, or the walls, of the composition and not extend beyond the visible screen.

As of now, I have to manually press “Enter” each time to make a new line, and if something changes (i.e. I decide to add a word) I have to manually change the layout of the text.

Is there any to set a firm boundary line at which point the text starts a new line?

Select the type tool (Cmd+T on a Mac, Ctrl+T on Windows). Instead of clicking to create point type, drag to create paragraph type with bounding rectangles.

To convert your already-entered point type to paragraph type, select the type tool, right-click on your type layer in the comp viewer, then choose Convert to Paragraph Type. (It will contain line breaks that you’ll have to remove for proper flow.) When you click in the paragraph type with the type tool, you’ll see (and can adjust) the paragraph boundaries.
