  • How to select left or right edge of a clip with a keyboard command?

Posted by Tim Green on September 29, 2010 at 9:14 pm

I’m trying to never have to touch the mouse…

You know how when you click on an edit, or on the edge of a clip, it highlights it, and you can use option-left/right arrow or option-shift-left/right arrow to move the in point or the edit?

Well that’s great, but how do you get the left or right edge of the clip highlighted without having to use the mouse? Is there a key command for that?

In other words, say your play head is in the middle of a clip and nothing is selected cuz you double-clicked on a clip or something like that and went back to the timeline. I can use up and down arrow to go to the edit but how do I get the edit selected so I don’t have to grab the mouse just for one click?

I hope this is clear… I don’t even know what it’s called when you highlight the edge of the clip. I’m just trying to use the mouse less.

When I’m doing a bunch of quick trimming, the only time I have to use the mouse is to get that edge highlighted and it slows me down.

I’ve looked at all the key commands in the Keyboard Layout, and even tried every combination in a test project to try to find it, but no luck so far.

    Thanks!

[Tim Green] “I’m trying to never have to touch the mouse…”

Have you considered a Wacom tablet?

If I understand you correctly you want to SELECT an EDIT.

    PRESS the V key.

This selects the edit or closest edit under the timeline cursor on the lowest numbered track with auto select enabled.

… or something like that. I am not in front of a system right now.

Thanks so much, Matt. It works perfectly, and yes, it’s right there in the Keyboard Layout. Duh.

Then U to toggle sides of the edit – there isn’t a select outgoing / incoming / both like Avid AIUI.

Thanks, Trevor. That’s very useful. I’m actually ashamed at how long I’ve been using FCP and didn’t know these two basic commands! :-\

I learned a lot today, and it’s already helping.

You can have the button list window open while you work and just type in “select” or “roll” or “toggle” etc. and it will show you a list of buttons.
    Matt.
