[Nick White] “Based on results or experience? Sorry to challenge, but so often rumour will win”

Based on experience and testing, Sony MXF 422 50Mbps gives the least loss with the smallest file size. In my testing it has less loss than CineForm even. I did my tests by rendering a NTSC Color Bars and placing them back into Vegas on a new track that was composited with the Difference mode. No loss will produce a totally black frame. Anything loss will be seen as artifacts. I encourage you to try this test yourself.

If you want lossless use uncompressed, Sony YUV, Lagarith, or Huffyuv. The question is do you NEED no loss or do you WANT no loss? i.e., if you can’t see any loss was anything really lost? 😉 It is extremely rare that you need totally lossless and it’s amazing that people will edit JPG files over and over and never think twice about it but they freak out when they find out that video is lossy. Reality check… JPG is extremely lossy and no one really notices because our eyes can’t tell.

Thanks for the insight. Seriously. Not being sarky. I will look at what you talk about of using Difference to check loss.
