How to render down a HD movie clip to less than 10 meg and still have good full screen resolution and sound
I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio 13. I took two, 2HR movies of my band at a gig and set my camera on the highest resolution, Frame Rate (60P), HD Quality. Both movies are over 15GB each. I have trimmed down one song to a video snippet (M2TS) which is about 1 GB. I need to render this down to no more than 10 Meg so it can be posted on our band facebook page but can’t figure out the best setting. It either still comes out too gigantic (800meg) or, if I render it to about 19 Meg, the quality is very poor and is pixellated. Can anyone help me with what to render as? WMV, MOV, Mpeg-2, MP4…… Customized Template from one of those? Thanks for any help.

There is only one thing that determines file size and that’s bitrate. You must first determine how long the video is. Then depending on the length of the video you can do the math to determine the bitrate needed achieve the size that you want. There are many bitrate calculators available on the Internet to help you. (just search for “mp4 bitrate calculator”)
Quality is determined by frame size and frame rate for a given bitrate. You might want to render to 1280×720-24p or even 960×540-24p if you need bit more quality. Most people using Facebook are going to be watching on a smartphone so the video doesn’t need to be a very large resolution to look good.
Finally use the MainConcept AVC encoder and make the Average Bitrate equal to the bitrate that you calculated with a bitrate calculator. Then use the Two Pass option to get the highest quality from that bitrate.

Not many! ????
Let’s say the song is 3 minutes. To encode 3 minutes of video and audio into a 10mb file you would have to use a bitrate of about 500kb. That’s is absolutely anemic! There was a QuickTime 7 present in Vegas Pro at 500kb and the frame rate was 15fps and the resolution was 320×240. What he wants us not practical.
I’m not sure why he things the video has to be 10mb. Facebook accepts videos up to 1.75GB!

So sorry guys, you are both totally right. For some dumb reason I thought I could get a 3 minute video to 10 meg or lower with good quality so I could e-mail it to friends (most e-mail’s won’t allow an attachment of > 10 meg). But, I tried and tried and the best I could get it down to was 19 meg. The quality was not good. Then I looked at the size of a 30 second video taken on my iPhone and saw it was 30 meg. If I want to send a large video file to a friend, I’ll use dropbox.

That is absolutely the way to go. Never send physical videos in an email… always sent a link to the video on dropbox or somewhere. Actually the best place would be to upload it to YouTube or Vimeo as a private video and give them a link to view it. Their smart phones might not want to play video from dropbox but YouTube is always a safe bet.
