  • How to render a clip with transparent background?

Posted by Maria Maronska on June 25, 2013 at 2:52 pm

I have a project in Sony Vegas, which consists of two small logos and one New blue FX text with some crawling effect.

On the timeline, all three elements are transparent (I see checkerboard on their timeline thumbnails). In the preview window the background is black (after right clicking I could change it to white).

Is it possible to render this clip with transparent background? Because currently, after rendering with preset “Internet HD 720p” this clip has black background. When I import it to another clip, the whole screen becomes black, while I’d like only the logos and text to be visible (as overlay to the video clip).

I know that Chroma key is used to make things transparent, but is it really necessary in my case?

You need an Alpha channel. Try Quicktime Animation, Quicktime PNG, or AVI uncompressed. I use QT Animation. Put the rendered file in your timeline, R-click, Properties and set Alpha to Straight.

As Tyson indicated, this is the one I use that John (Rofrano) taught me to use!

I always recommend the Quicktime PNG format instead, which handles
better in Vegas and smaller file size.
