  • How to remove director’s voice in vegas pro 10?

Posted by Aminul Islam on August 30, 2011 at 6:55 am

Hi all, I recently installed vegas pro 10 in my system with the intention of doing the first ever video editing in my life. Just for learning purpose, I downloaded some raw videos from Freddie’s youtube ( see this: facerocker.com/2010/12/05/editing-beach-justice-and-footage-download/ ) and tried to mix up a short film by my own.

However, the first problem I’m facing is removing director’s voice from the clips. Like, while shooting (not like action and cut), director says ‘waste him’, ‘run now’ etc. One particular example should be perfect in describing the situation. The raw scene shows actor running and at certain point he stops as another person says ‘freeze’ from behind. Right before he stops, director actually says to stop. And he was right before the camera so his voice is pretty loud.

Now, I could simply remove the audio and add background music. But that deletes the natural sound of running as well. I want to keep the natural sound but delete the voice of the director. It could be done copying ‘voiceless’ sound and pasting it right where director speaks. I know what to do, but as it appears, I just don’t know how to.

Can any vegas pro expert please help me with this? My entire test project is in halt simply because of this problem. 🙁

Thanks in advance for your help.

[Aminul Islam] “It could be done copying ‘voiceless’ sound and pasting it right where director speaks. I know what to do, but as it appears, I just don’t know how to.”

Select the event that you want to modify. Press the ‘U‘ key to Ungroup the Video and Audio. The use the ‘S‘ key to Split the audio on either side of the directors voice and use the Delete key to remove it from the timeline. Then just split another piece of good audio and Ctrl+Drag or Copy-Paste it into place.

BTW, what would normally happen is all the audio is replaced with ADR and Foley so the original audio is rarely used.

Thank you John, that really helps. What a simple task I was not able to figure out how to do. :”>

Anyway, what is ADR and Foley? I’m sorry but I don’t know the terms related to filmmaking as I’m not a student of it nor do I have much knowledge over this field.

ADR is Automated Dialog Replacement. It’s the task of having the actors come into a recording studio, watching the movie, and replacing their dialog lines one at a time. This is how Hollywood gets such good audio. It’s all done under the controlled conditions of a studio.

Foley is the art of creating sound effects like foot steps and rain and wind and doors opening a closing, etc. This is also done after the fact in a recording studio under controlled conditions. Basically every sound you hear in a movie was probably added later in a recording studio. The sound recorded on set is usually only used as a reference.

Ok. 🙂 Since now I just have to go the traditional way [of trying to remove unnecessary sound from the original audio], your tip helped a lot. Thanks again for your help. 🙂
