How To Reduce Working Time In After Effects
I am currently a visual fx student who edits on Premiere Pro and relies heavily on After Effects and my RAM preview and render times seem to be excessive. I recently built a PC that greatly improved performance, but it still doesn’t seem to be fast enough. What more can I change or upgrade on my system in order to get better results? This is my current setup:
Intel I7 950 3.06 ghz processor
24gb RAM
2 x 2TB SATA3 hard drives
Nvidia GTX285 graphics card
CS5 Master CollectionIs it worth upgrading my graphics card to one of the Quadro series cards? Will I see any significant speed increases by upgrading to CS5.5? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No. The graphics card matters very little to After Effects compared with RAM, CPUs, and hard disks.

CS5.5 takes advantage of the CUDA technology in both Premiere and AE, so a Quadro will help, as will more RAM.
Don’t forget also that lower resolution previews will increase the productivity as well.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

No, After Effects CS5.5 in no way uses CUDA.

That page on the Nvidia site that Ted pointed to doesn’t say anything about After Effects using CUDA. It is about After Effects using OpenGL.
Yeah, After Effects does use OpenGL. But not all that much. And, more important, the advantage gained by a high-end card is not much more than the advantage of a midle-of-the-road card.
As far as bang for the buck, it’s RAM, CPUs, and hard disks.
If you have money left over after maxing out those things, get the fancy graphics card.
Premiere Pro is a _totally_ different story: CUDA makes Premiere Pro CS5 and later _scream_, and the better cards really do often big benefits over the lesser cards.
