How to “overwrite” a small section of audio with other sound.
Hi, I have Vegas Pro 8b on a Sony Vaio VGN-AR790U. I’m a beginner & have learned a lot from the manual but can’t find out how to remove about 5 seconds of audio from a project & put 5 seconds of another sound from the same project in it’s place.
I can’t seem to make a selection to cut the 5 seconds of audio out without it selecting the video track above my audio track for the same 5 seconds. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would add a second audio track, put that 5 seconds of audio in the correct location on the second audio track, and then use a volume envelope to lower the volume for that 5 seconds on the main audio track.
Alternately, you can “S”plit the 5 seconds of audio out of the main track, delete it, and then drop in the new audio.

To “S”plit the audio track as Edward says without also splitting the video track you need to ‘ungroup’ the audio and video which are grouped by default. Probably the easiest way is to click on the icon for ‘ignore event grouping’, then select the audio track, then place your cursor at the beginning of the section you want to remove and hit S, then place the cursor at the end of the piece of audio you want to delete and press S. Then select the split section by clicking on it (it will change colors) then hit delete.
Remember to untick the ‘ignore event grouping’ when you are done or you will probably run into other troubles later.
