How to match different HD footage with HDV?
Posted by Delano Bryant on August 6, 2006 at 9:42 pmI am editing footage shot in different formats. The main one is HD shot on a Varicam. Some of the other was shot using any type of HDV cam. I need to have the HDV match to the HD so that it all blends and looks good and doesn’t cause my machine to crash or lock up. ANy suggetstions?

August 6, 2006 at 11:57 pmWell, first thing to do is upconvert the HDV to DVCPROHD… then use your best judgement as to color matching. I really find that the color correction window arrangement with the Frame viewer and video scopes helps. You’ll not get the HDV to look as good as the Varicam though, probably can get color to look similar but… ya get somethin for that extra 60 grand…

August 7, 2006 at 12:16 amlol.. Yeah thanks Jerry. YOu know how some clients are they don’t quite want to pull the trigger all the way. I have a G5 2.7 with 4 gigs of ram. Is my machine big enough or fast enough to edit HD uncompressed? I have the best video that Apple made for it inside. Do I need a seperate card like a voodoo. BTW the footage is captured at the clients then put onto a RAID for me. Then i bring it to my system and edit on here….. Any thoughts that I’ll need to keep in mind?

August 7, 2006 at 1:25 amI am doing HD uncompressed 10 bit 4.2.2 on the same model G5 with 3 gigs RAM. As long as the RAID is fast enough then it is no problem to do uncompressed HD on your computer.
I like using the Canon XLH1 to capture HDV pics as it has an HDSDI built in, although it doesn’t embed audio. Software uprez of HDV to uncompressed looks good, but nothing beats real time. The new cheaper Canon has HDSDI with embeded audio. Looking forward to that puppy. Both the Miranda and Convergent boxes are good too, but they tend to have a picture glitch on camera stops.

August 7, 2006 at 4:47 amHow about Varicam footage? The client gives me the footage already captured on their drives. Is there anything I’ll run into? I am assuming that I’ll have to connect their drives to my box via firewire. Is there a better way? scsi perhaps?
