How to mask a 3D layer’s casted shadows?
So if you look at the attached image, you should be able to get an idea of what I’m doing. I want the text and its shadows to appear like they’re behind the guy on the bike as he coasts by. I have no problem masking the text, but the shadow still seems to come through (you can see the shadow on the guy’s tan jacket). How do I also mask the shadow so it appears behind the guy?

I believe that your “floor” layer contains the shadow. Hence use the same mask/matte that you use for the main text, for the ‘shadow layer’.

Oh right, of course! I’ll just keyframe the mask around the guy as a matte on the text layer, and then just duplicate and apply to the shadow layer. Not sure why I didn’t make that connection before coming here. Thanks!

An alternative I would suggest is to duplicate your background plate, place it above all the layers and mask the foreground subject as needed to block the text/shadow. This way if you add more background layers you won’t end up with another duplicated matte for every one.
