How to make toothpaste (or caulking) stick to a wall
Posted by Pierre Tessier on April 19, 2017 at 11:40 pmThis is an animation of toothpaste (or caulking) coming out of a tube. I’d like the paste to be applied vertical, to a wall. How can I make it stick to a vertical surface?

April 20, 2017 at 12:02 amIf this is for a close-up shot I think the easiest way to simulate that would be to add a camera and rotate it either -90 or +90 degrees in bank, depending upon whether you want the tube to move up or down the “wall” (what would be the former floor).

April 20, 2017 at 12:09 amThanks Jim. This is something I thought of. However, the caulking needs to be applied both vertically and horizontally in the same sequence. So it won’t work. I did try something that works OK. I set the gravity to 0. So the stuff coming out of the tube just stay there, since there’s no attraction downward. Then I animate the density to its normal setting just before the tube start applying the caulking horizontally.

April 20, 2017 at 2:14 pmI almost got it. By removing the gravity, the caulking is actually standing up. But it is still going down very slowly, as if there were a little bit of gravity left. Any idea how I could get rid of that?

April 20, 2017 at 4:31 pmThe slow vertical movement is due to the speed of the particles, but if you zero that out you lose the interactions which cause the paste to bulge and fold. I don’t think there’s a way to eliminate the movement without also eliminating the folding, so hopefully someone else can chime in with an alternative.

April 20, 2017 at 4:53 pmit’s the speed of the original particles that makes it move. You might be able to use the Friction object to slow them down but it will still move for a bit
