  • How to make people disappears and pop-up in the screen in more ethereal/poetic fashion way??

    Hi,

I am currently edit a short film for a director in LA. The story is about a ghost who lives in a pen. Whoever use this pen will make a different life. The ghost is not what people see the ghost in the horror film, she is actually beautiful with some kind of muse.

In the scene she (the ghost) pop-up in the scene and disappears so many times. During the shooting they did the old way which is make actors freeze for a moment. However, I just wandering that is there any way to make this old school effect looks more interesting or more ethereal/poetic feeling? What I can think of right now is to roto the actor and put some blur/glow before she disappears.

I am opening for any advice and any kindly recommend. Very very appreciate it.

    Thanks

You could try using the CC-Ball effect with a really soft blur which might give you the effect of the ghost traveling between locations? I’ve used this effect for a Matrix like shot before.

    Hi,

CC Ball seems very interesting. I just play around with it. Now I get an idea……I am thinking of make it higher level.

How about make the ghost disappear like a fog or something like sand blow in the wind??? It is possible?? If yes, how to make it and make it looks good?

    thank you so much

So this question is also for everyone who know how to do it. How to bring the ghost disappear to next level? I mean, something looks like fog or sand blow away??

    thanks

For high quality/level effects like a sandman dissapear you would need to use something like Trapcode Particular. I’ve seen some amazing effects achieved using this tool. The trick is that your “ghost” will need to be keyed to make the “ghost” into particles without affecting the environment around it.

unless you rotoscope your subject(ghost), any effect you use will effect your entire frame. in order to effect only the ghost, you must isolate that person/ghost/object. green screen would be ideal in this situation, however, rotoscoping may be the next best option if you dont have your ghost on a green screen…

    unless the ghost isnt moving.

if your ghost isnt moving you could grab stills…maybe 5 stills of your ghost in slightly different positons. you could use these stills to bring your ghost in and out.

i think the key here is to have your ghost as a single layer, that is, the ghost is cut from the background. if you want this whispy, sand-blowing effect then your ghost needs to be a seperate element from the background.

I think Matthew is on the right track. If you can, use Particular. He’s also right that you’ll have to roto the ghost, but it seems you were already planning on that.

You can use the ghost layer as your particle emitter. Then you can use the colors from the ghost layer for the particle colors. With a little patience, you can make a nice transition from the ghost footage to the particles dissipating. Once you get it working, it’s just a matter of tweaking the particles to get what you want, ie smoke, mist, sand, whatever…

    Hi,

Thank you guys. I know how to roto to ghost. I have taken this kind of class before. I also have Trapcode particular in my AE CS3. However, I am not very good at this plug-ins. Is there any specific tutorial or would you guys give me more hint of how to do it in particular? I mean, I need more detail of how to use particular for the final result.

    very appreciate it.

    thanks

Just do a search and you can find plenty of tutorials on particular.

Also, you might want to take a look at shatter as well. It can be quite a render hog but if you crank up your repetitions using the glass or stars and something preset you can get some really cool sandy efx.

    Hi,

Thank you so much. I do find some very useful tutorial. I also noticed that there is a very cool text transfer to sand demo in Trapcode new plug-in “Form”. (https://www.trapcode.com/movies/TextToSand_h.mov)

However, when I tried to download the project file, it doesn’t let me download the file and show me the error message. Does anybody successfully download that file?

    thanks

Without Particular, you might be able to apply some ripple effects and keyframe it as a distortion mask.

Eran Stern does some interesting things with his “invisible cape” tutorial, some of the elements of which you could use towards getting your desired effect…

With a bit of imagination, I’m sure you will dream up something very effective…
