Using a couple of layers of particular will often improve particle animations.

I would think that the key would be using a high initial velocity for the particles. Then under the physics section increasing air resistance and adding a slow large amplitude spin that has a fairly long delay. You may also want to use an auxiliary system that produces only as the particles get closer to death (these options are in the Settings dialog).

Thanks for the response Darby – amplitude spin wasn’t something I’d tried playing with before and t seems to be a missing ingredient!
