How to insert black border on right and left of screen
I just filmed a seminar with a speaker using Power Point and had a second camera just focused on the Power Point presentation. I can adjust the framing of the PP using event pan and crop which centers it and makes it fit top to bottom of the screen. But I would like to cover the space on the left and right of the screen. The PP screen is 4:3 and the video will be 16:9 so there is space on the right and left of the screen I’d like to fill with a black border to make it look better. How can I do this?

You might need to place a Black Solid Color Generated Media event above the PowerPoint track and use the Mask tool in Pan/Crop to cut out the center section. This will give you a black bar overlay. At that point you could make the bars any color you want. I prefer using a dark gray or a color that matches/compliments the presentation background making it look more stylized.

Another quick question. I finished one of several sessions already and edited it using UltimateS pro to cut in the PP scenes. Can I just do what you suggested with the PP track and then will it change the final edit to reflect that, or is there some other process I need. I will try to do the second session the way you suggested before I edit in the PP slides.

If you have two video tracks, place the one that you don’t want masked on the top, then the black mask track, then the PP track. This way only the PP track is affected by the mask. Vegas processes tracks from the top down so what’s on the highest track will take precedence.

Thanks John, appreciate you getting back to me on this so quickly. I was not putting the tracks in the right order, but will put the main cam track on top, then the black mask track and then the PP track. I have about a dozen more to do.
Two problems still. First and most important, I can’t figure out how to cut out the center section of the black mask track to adjust it to cut out the sides of the PP track. I tried the Sony Mask Generator tool on the black track? Can’t seem how to make that work. Can you give a quick description on how to cut out the center of the mask track?
And secondly I have already edited one session with Ultimate S cutting in all the PP slides, but had the PP track on top and no black mask track. Is there any way to fix this without having to re-edit this section completely by possibly adding a black mask track and moving the PP track below the main cam track?

Open the Pan/Crop tool. At the bottom are two tracks. One of them says Position and the other says Mask. Select the mask track and use the one tool to drag a 4 point mask.

Yes, just create a new track for the mask and drag it above the PP track in the timeline.

Thanks so much John. This really makes it clear and was very helpful. It’s a bit tricky using the tool to get the points at just the right location, but it definitely works and I appreciate your help with this.
