How to Import video only, no audio.

When you import a file it is linked in Premiere so if the source file has audio then it will show up. That said you don’t have to use the audio. You can use the mouse and drag only the video to your timeline or if you deselect track targeting for audio then your edit won’t use the audio tracks.

Well I did end up just muting the tracks I didn’t want. But that can be a lot of wasted real estate. And going in and unlinking the audio from the video then deleting can be quite time consuming. Just seems like something common enough that there would be an option for it.

What exactly are you doing that would need you to not use any audio and taking off the audio targeting from the sequence isn’t enough?

I’m importing dozens and dozens of clips that are being set to music so I don’t need any of the audio from the video itself.

Maybe I’m not sure what you mean by taking off the audio targeting…And as I typed that I realize yeah, I haven’t got a clue what you mean.

You see the source monitor? See at the bottom there’s a film strip icon and a sound waveform icon? If you click on and drag the video IMAGE, both video and audio will appear on the timeline. If you grab the film strip and drag, only the video will appear on the timeline. If you grab the waveform and drag, only the audio track will appear on the timeline.

Alternatively, select ALL clips you do not want audio for in the bins.

Right-Click and select “Modify–>Audio Channels”

Change the “number of audio tracks” to zero. Save that setting with a name of your choice. (I called mine “No audio, please!”)

You have now globally changed it for all selected files. When you pull them into the Source monitor or timeline, you will have no audio tracks at all.

Put your clips on the timeline. Either click/drag mouse to select all clips or CTRL A, then right-click and UNLINK. Now click/drag to select/highlight just all the audio clips. DELETE. Simple, takes 2 seconds.

Jeff, that’s what I was doing at the beginning of my journey. But when you have to do it for a few hundred clips, it gets seriously tedious and time consuming…
