Hi Craig. When you say “retrieve a clip after you changed it” I’m assuming you mean call up an old version of the sequence? If you went into the Attic and couldn’t find an old enough version, check your settings tab…(not infront of my machine right now, so guessing the actual tab) Bin settings? There are Attic settings, where you can set the number of items in the attic, and the number of copies of any particular sequence in the attic. Make sure your numbers are high enough to allow for several copies to be saved.

When I bring in stuff from the Attic, i usually copy 2 or 3 to the desktop, rename them something like “oops”, “oops2” and “oops3”. I load each one individually into the program to decide which is going back far enough. Then i can delete my original bin – that “oops” is going to replace, and rename oops to its original name. I like keeping my bins clean, with no duplicates.

As far as project management. For Tutorial purposes, the easiest thing would probably be to simpy make a new project, and start again.

Im assuming by getting back to normal, you mean square 1?

It sounds like you did the correct sequence to delete your project…

To delete a project, you don’t really need to delete the attic, although keeping things clean is never a bad idea. You should be able to run your media tool, to help you identify the media associated with the project, and delete that media. You could also simply select the media from within the bins of your project, and delete them right there. Make sure to select all the delete options, or you may just delete the clips in the bin, but not the actual media associated with it.

The actual project can just be deleted by finding your Avid Projects folder on your hard drive and deleting it right there. When you reboot Avid, that project will no longer exist…and you can start again.

If you want to do an uninstal, there is an uninstaller in the application section. It will help you do a full uninstall. You shouldn’t need to reinstall just to get a project back to the basics though. Again, if nothing else, just create a new project and call it Version 2.

Thanks Glen. I follow you and glad I didn’t do anything stupid. But no matter what I try the attic now does not have copies of the bins files folders of any project. If I make changes to a clip it starts showing up in the attic. But the original clips, bins, folders, etc are not in there. I even tried deleting all cases of msmFMID.pmr and msmMMOB.mdb and when I relaunched MC it did one of those rebuilds (I think that’s the right term) which replaced the msmFMID.pmr and msmMMOB.mdb files on my drives but the attic was still empty except for an empty folder of each project and new changes.

Now that said the clips folders and bins are still in my project window in MC. So my question is how do I get the attic to repopulate? I was really hoping to be done with the on-line tutorials and hit the certification book I bought to review this in a lot more detail. Though i guess getting the basic organization structure and what can go wrong is worth the pain.

Craig the attic has nothing to do with your media or its data bases. It is simply the holder of your Autosave files. When Avid saves your bin, the previous version is saved in the attic. As soon as you deleted the attic, you lost all those original autosave files.

The rebuilding of the databases is useful when the box is not seeing media it should be seeing, but will have no effect at all on your attic. As you move forward with this training sequence, you should see your attic increase in size as your saves occur, but that is all it is there for. Being able to call up an old version of your bin, prior to a change that you want to undo, but don’t have enough undos available for.

Am i understanding your question correctly?

As for your final statement
Though i guess getting the basic organization structure and what can go wrong is worth the pain.

In my opinion, the best tutorial in the world is one in which something bad happens, and makes you realize that i should’ve done this, or shouldn’t have done that. “perfect” tutorials are a waste of time.

Edit sessions are never perfect.

hope some of this helps. I started on Avid in ’95, and started using Final cut in about ’06, and am currently trying to learn premiere as well, so I feel your pain.

Glen,

I’ll feel fine once I get past this. But I’m going around in circles nowhere fast.

I get this. But none of the bins are in there unless I make a change to a clip. Then only that clip is there, not the one I started with.

Now I know I deleted the attic folder for this project. But I deleted everything I could of this project. Opened MC – project not listed. Quit MC. Went back to my original zip file from AVID. Copied the projects folder to my documents folder. Copied the media to the media drive. ETC. Opened the project – all folders are there with attached media, but the attic only has an empty folder with the project name. Originally the entire folder contents would be there.

Either something was left behind that remembers that I deleted the stuff from the attic or the attic settings are wrong or corrupted.

I’ve also noticed that some of this tutorial is dated. If gives advice that the help document in 5.5 does not and the entire thing is shot on a windows platform. I think I’m gonna try to switch to the book now and see if I have any of these problems with those files.

I also tried the help document for how to “delete a project” and it told me to launch media composer, highlight the project on the list, and press delete. I got a directory error message that would not let this complete, so something’s wrong.

If need be I’ll uninstall and reinstall.

I trashed all again. Loaded the media and project files for the certification book and so far am a happy camper. Much more detail. More open ended. And I can see all the files in the attic. So I guess nothing is broken except maybe the files from the previous project. Thanks for your help. Would love to have gotten the attic populated again with a back-up of the previous project but have to cut the cord. I think something got corrupted.
