How to get Apple PRO Res 422 HQ for XDCAM EX3 files.
Hi.
I tried log & transfer files on FCP for XDCam mp4 files. It works but the codec that is used by default is XDCAM EX codec 35 mbps vbr. But i want to use Aplle Pro Res 422. IN log & transfer preferences there is only 2 options one is for P2 files & another is for AVCH files, & both has the feature of Apple Pro Res 422. But there is no option for EX3 files which has the feature of Apple PRO REs 422. Kindly help. -

You can’t convert XDCAM to ProRes via Log and Transfer. Nor the Sony Transfer Utility. YOu can only import native. If you want the files to be ProRes, you need to MEDIA MANAGE them to that format.

What do you mean by media manage… could you please ellaborate.. Do I have to use Media manage of FCP? if yes then how? Or is there a software provided in Sony Clip Manager?….

You have to use the MEDIA MANAGER of FCP…the RECOMPRESS option. The manual will have the step by step. Or you can use Compressor.

Thanks, but is there any easier way to do this, as there r few 100 files that I need to do. I m editing a documentary film & most of the footage that I shot was on canon hdslr & few are in EX3. But I want to edit the whole construction in Apple Pro Res 422. Canons log & transfer supports Prores 422 very easily, but for EX3 it’s not happening. I hope u understand my situation

I do. And what we did was import via the Sony tool to XDCAM, then use Compressor to make everything ProRes. But you don’t NEED to. You can use a ProRes sequence and just drop the XDCAM footage onto it. Render it to ProRes later. Otherwise, convert beforehand. I wish there was a way, but from what I can tell, there isn’t.

Why do you want to transcode the EX stuff?
Edit native on a Prores sequence.

Thanks Shane, I can create the ProRes Construction & drop ex3 files & then render it. But when I chckedthe data rate of canon footage with apple pro res hq 422 it’s about 21mb/s. And ex3 with 35mb mode is still about 4.4mb/s. Which means canon prores footage quality is 5 times more then Sony. Will I notice any difference after rendering both the footages in prores construction? I intend to release this film in theatres thats the reason I m pretty concern with the final output. Or is there any alternative method to edit?

That only means that Prores files are 5 folds bigger than the original Canon files, while the quality is the same (one re-compression on top). You get the same if you convert the EX files to Prores: Bigger files, same quality.
The ONLY reason for transcoding the Canon footage is because H264 is not supported on FC.
It would be great editing that stuff native.

ProRes is 21 MB/s ( Megabytes)
EX3 is 35 Mb/s ( Megabits )ProRes 21 MB/s is around 160 Mb/s ( Megabits )
EX 35 Mb/s is around 4 MB/s ( Megabyte)
