  • How to format a disk on Windows with Macintosh’s HFS+ file system

Posted by Joseph Herman on August 22, 2011 at 7:34 pm

Hello, I have a external SSD drive that I need to format in the Mac’s HFS+ file system.

Is there some sort of utility of program that can do this in Windows 7?

I’m not sure if this is the best forum for this question, but I didn’t seem to see any others that were geared towards this type of inquiry.

    Thank you!

why not just pop it onto a MAC. I am unaware of any Win7 program that can do this for you.

Or download, burn, and run off disc – Ubuntu Linux. That can format for Win or Mac, and you don’t have to install it.

Do you specifically require HFS? Would exFAT work for this?

Mediafour’s MacDrive for Windows will let you format a Windows mounted drive with a Mac partition. I know it supports HFS formatting as shown in this link below:

So I have to assume the other flavors such as HFS+ would be there. But fortunately they have a free 5 days trial so you can see for yourself.

[Chris Gwynne] “Mediafour’s MacDrive for Windows will let you format a Windows mounted drive with a Mac partition.”

Thank you! I was just looking at it yesterday wondering about the same thing (if it can do partitions and format them) – but couldn’t find it on their web site.
